Who are we?

The non-profit association "Creative Writing Behind Bars" supports inmates in Kenya's largest women's prison with socially integrative projects. In the middle of the vibrant East African metropolis of Nairobi, hundreds of women and their children below school age are locked up behind bars. They are often threatened with administrative oblivion, so that it takes years before a legally binding verdict is reached.

Our goal is to give them a second chance in life and to give them moments of confidence in the dreariness of everyday life in prison. The fates of the children of imprisoned mothers are also very close to our hearts. Even small donations of a few francs help us to put a warm smile on the often sad faces of the children with a basket full of fresh fruit.

Together with other local organisations, we contribute in order to break down psychosocial, economic and cultural barriers.

With our help, many women have been able to start their second chance after their release with courage and a well thought-out life plan.

The association "Creative Writing Behind Bars", based in Haldenstein, Switzerland, is characterised by simple association structures, so that every donation fully benefits the women and children in Langata Women's Prison. All board members and project leaders work on a voluntary basis, or as President Thomas S. Müller said during his last visit to Nairobi: "The joy and gratitude in the faces behind the walls give me endless strength to continue our work for a long time to come".
